Working on Winston-Salem’s Older Housing Stock
Winston-Salem has some of the oldest continuously occupied neighborhoods in the Triad, and it shows in the wiring. In the West End, Ardmore and parts of Buena Vista we still encounter original knob-and-tube runs in attics and crawlspaces, often buried under blown-in insulation added decades later. That combination is the single most common safety issue we find in the Twin City. Our approach is to identify which circuits are still live on the old system, isolate them, and replace them section by section rather than tearing the house apart at once.
Reynolda-area and Sherwood Forest homes are typically mid-century, where the wiring is grounded but the panels are aging and the load has grown. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels turn up here more than anywhere else we work; both have known failure histories, and replacing them is usually the highest-value electrical improvement a homeowner can make.
Closer to downtown and in converted loft and mixed-use spaces, the work shifts toward commercial-style service: dedicated circuits for equipment, lighting retrofits, and correcting alterations made during previous build-outs. Winston-Salem's hillier terrain and mature tree canopy also mean more overhead service damage after ice storms than we see on the Greensboro side.
